Classics Optimus Prime
I'd say that, by now, everyone has either the Classics or Henkei version of Optimus Prime. But for those who don't, here's an updated version of our old review.
These days, every new line has a version of Optimus Prime. Some are impressive, like the Cybertron release. Some not so much, like the Energon version.
Around the time that the Classics line was released, I know that I personally was ready for a new, definitive update of everyones favourite Autobot leader.
Classics Optimus Prime - Vehicle Mode
Optimus Prime sports a flat nosed cab appearance for his alt. mode, the same kind that we've been used to since G1, save some exceptions. Given that the Classics toyline is basically a way to update the original toys, they've done an impressive job here.
The standard red and blue paint scheme we're all familiar with is applied here with highlights of yellow and grey/silver and the windows are transparent blue plastic.
On top is a windbreaker, a new addition to any Prime mold, which is the same red as the base coat, with silver stripes. And on the back are silver and black smokestacks.
The vehicle is big, chunky and seems to me to be a combination of Generation One Prime with Armada Prime stylings. He's got a powerful juggernaut quality to this mode.
Classics Optimus Prime - Robot Mode
Transformation from truck to robot is very similar to the original toy. I guess if it isn't broke, you shouldn't fix it. The rear blue parts become the legs, the sides of the truck flip out to be come his arms. Some twisting is involved around the torso to trim down his body but all in all, it's almost identical.
I guess Optimus has been working out at the Protihex gym. He looks all slim, trim but buffed up. He's also had a face lift. Prime not only looks athletic but also looks younger.
In robot mode, the same blue/red motif carries over, obviously, but the grey and yellow touch ups are a bit more prominent. Prime also stands quite tall, taller than his G1 incarnation.
The most important thing with is now the amount of articulation - Shoulders, elbows, head, chest, waist, upper legs, knees, feet - he is one of the most poseable TF toys I've seen outside of the alternator line, which makes for some great posing.
Round the back is some kibble - notably the bumper and grill of his vehicle mode Unfortunately, it's not all that well hidden, but from the front, it's not an eyesore.
I love RID Prime. Time was, I though RID Prime was the coolest Optimus Prime toy since G1. Classics Prime is really nipping at his heels right now just because he is a nice update to the original version, has a young, battle ready "personality" to him, and his poseability is hard to top.
Weapons
The smokestacks on Primes vehicle mode transform in what looks like a double barrelled pump action shotgun. A very nice weapon to accompany Prime indeed.
Also, the windplate thats on top of the cab mode detaches and transforms into a catoony looking cannon. I dont think it suits Prime himself so I use it for one of my other Classics toys who it suits MUCH better.
Overall
Primes quality, poseability, weight, size and G1 inspirations make him a definitive purchase. A second perfect score, despite the kibble on the back
Score - 5/5
