The Dx figure ive most wanted ever since it was announced.
An excellent pair of figures not without their flaws.
They come packaged in Alt mode so I will start there
Skids and Mudflap have a sort of reverse Duocon thing going on with 2 robots combining to form one vehicle.
They are a pink and off white ice cream van.
they have very few of the decals that adorned the screen model.
the have "creamy ice cream across the top
and "made fresh for you" across the front wheel wellsAn ice cream cone picture adorns the sides.
The wheels are very nicely painted in silver and pink.
The front windows are translucent blue the the rear windows a painted blue that ,surprisingly for a HAsbro toy, match the translucent windows nicely. the headlights are also done in translucent blue. the only other colour to appear in this mode is the grey on the front grill and bullhorn on the top of the truck.
Both halves of the truck hold together very securely.
Transformation is very satisfying with some great panel folding to make the kibble dissapear
SKIDS:
Skids forms the front half of the truck .
Once detached from Mudflap theres a fun little transformation with some of the nice folding I mentioned earlier to turn the entire hood/windshield/roof assembly into a very compact little backpack.
New colours in this form are pure white on the upper arms and legs and a bright blue on the eyes.
Skids has ball jointed hips and knees with a swivel and hinge. He has some waist articulation due to the transformation. The sholders have almost no articulation. In my opinion a ball joint on on end of the transformtaion joint would have improved this. The elbows are hinged and the giant arm is on a hinge. The head is also on a ball joint A surprising amount of poseability for such a tiny little figure.
Here he is with his other self
MUDFLAP:
Mudlap forms the other 2/3 of the truck.
Again some nice little touchs in the transformation to make the sides fold around the figurs body.
As with skids the only new colours added are the blue for the eyes and the pure white on the upper portions of the limbs
He has much the same articulation as his brother with the addition of ball jointed shoulders. I have a couple of grips with Muddy. 1 )He towers over Skids
2) the shoulders don't lock into anything the just kind of hang there.
Once again a shot of Mudflap with his other self
So as a whole the set is quite nice, but I cant help but feeling it isn't quite right. In my opinion it had the potential to be the most characterfull mold in the entire line and it falls short of that chiefly due to the woefull lack of paint apps. Hasbro went to the hassle of sculpting in rust patchs and damage and then didnt paint them. the van looks prestine , like its just rolled off the assembly line. The same goes for the robot modes. At the very least the hands should have been painted to make them stand out more. The mold is absolutely chock full of sculpted detailing but these details are lost simply because of the colour of the plastic.
This is one of those rare occasions where a bigger size class would have better suited the figures.
So after all that would I reckomend this mold? Yes I would. In spite of it's flaws it's fun and with a little TLC from a paintbrush will be one of my fav ROTF figures for a long time to come
4.5/5
