As part of the wave of N.E.S.T voyagers we got two new molds & one retool & repaint of an existing mold. Bludgeon and Mindwipe seem to be getting all the loving (which, having seen them in person the other day, they deserve) but I figured I’d put up a review for Ironhide as I know others on the forum would be reviewing Bludgeon and Mindwipe.
I’ve passed on getting the Ironhide toy before, I thought the original 2007 release was a bit bland and the oversized blue rocket launchers threw me right off.
The mold was redecoed when ROTF came out with a gray colour scheme and an autobot logo on the doors along with a retooled Rocket launcher that could be mounted on the vehicle mode back. Again, I didn’t like the look of that version so I passed.
When this version of the toy was announced last summer I was genuinely happy to see it, I’ve been hounding Jason in Modelmania for ages for this figure and I got him in hand two weeks ago.
Vehicle Mode.
Ironhide now has “Zebra” markings to break up his colour scheme a bit. A bull bar has been added to the front of the vehicle along with bars on the back of the vehicle mode. These bars can be used to store Ironhide’s accessories in Vehicle mode. The result is that it looks like a hillbillies wet dream.
Robot Mode.
Ironhide has a new head sculpt that is on a ball joint so he can actually look around. The hood of the vehicle doesn’t really sit that well in robot mode so it’s a bit floppy. I’m told that’s a problem with the other releases of this figure as well. There are more colours on show (blue and gold) in this mode which improves the look a lot over other releases of this toy.
Transformation from one mode to another is a bit fiddly; It can be a pain matching up the panels and leg joints. The legs in particular need to be done precisely or it won’t look right.
The bars from the rear of the vehicle end up behind the shoulders in robot mode so the weapons can be clipped on here if you want.
Weapons:
Ironhide is armed to the teeth. The toy includes.
1.His right arm cannon from the films, this doesn’t fire a missile (unlike other versions of the toy).
2.A Rifle
3.A Gatling Gun
4.A firing missile launcher which attaches to the left arm. The bull bar from the vehicle mode is attached to this to make it look like a crossbow.
5.2 knives.
Most of these weapons are interchangeable with N.E.S.T deluxe Brawn. Ironhide can hold all these weapons in Robot mode as the Gatling Gun and Rifle can clip on over his shoulders or can be attached to the right missile launcher. Also, either of the knives can be attached to the rifle as a bayonet.
I would have liked for the rifle and Gatling gun to have some more paint as they as just solid gray which is a pity as the weapons are well detailed, you just can’t really see it. The blades of the knives should have been painted to make them stand out. They would look really well painted silver.
Overall the toy is well worth it, the changes, such as the new ball jointed head mold, additional colours in robot mode along with the new weapons would probably make it a good purchase even if you have a version of the figure already.
