Reflector was one of those G1 toys I always wanted as a kid but never could get my hands on. Back in the day the toy was a mail away exclusive involving robot points off the packaging of specially marked Transformers.
Fast forward to 2011 and thanks to the wizards at Perfect Effect we get new updated forms of Spectro ,Spyglass and Viewfinder ( or Shield ,Bullet and Edge when they are hiding from Hasbro's Laywers).
These guys are tiny. I cant stress strongly enough how small they are. How small are they wellll,
That would be LEGENDS class Starscream towering over poor old Spectro.
Rather then detracting from the set this small size actually serves to highlight just how skilled the Perfect Effect team really is
Out of the box you'll notice the accessory count is massive.
Each robot has his own personal equipment to help distinguish themselves from the others. The knives are microscopic and sharp so take care when handling.
All three bots are identical in terms of body and articulation with only some cosmetic detailing to tell them apart
Viewfinder is the most different with the lens sculpted into his torso (with a shutter moulded on the inside). Other then that its the paint aps which tells the trio apart. Viewfinder has green wrist bands and leg marking while Spectro and Spyglass have red and blue respectively. A subtle mod to the original g1 toy.
Sculpt wise this set seems to be based mainly on the IDW incarnation of the trio from All Hail Megatron
The head sculpt are identical on all three figures but very well executed.
The only downside is the expression is the same on all three members. I can't help but wish they had made three different ones. A minor complaint at best
Now earlier I had said that the sets size only highlighted its quality. Here's why, articulation> the set has ball jointed shoulders, elbows, hips, knees and neck. There is also a waist swivel and foot tilts. That level of movement on a figure that small is phenomenal
Once kitted out with their equipment the team goes from being triplets to looking vastly different.
Viewfinder gains a pair of shotguns and a small shield on each arm
Looks pretty cool but nothing mind blowing
Spectro gets missile rack shoulders ,a riot shield and a sniper rifle. The way the rifle is formed is nice with a long barrel and a scope attaching to one of the shotguns that comes with the set. Sadly the articulation does not allow him to hold the rifle with 2 hands.
Spyglass is probably my favourite of the three. He gets a large minigun and what's supposed to be a rocket pack
There is some nice detailing on the inside of the rockets to simulate thrusters.
Personally i prefer to close the pack up and use it as an ammo feed for the mini gun
there is also a couple of combined weapon modes for the set
The lens (formed from Spyglass's jet pack and the arm guards from viewfinder) combines with the minigun to form a sort of mega bazooka
its to the figures credit that he can stand while holding this thing as its rather weighty
The other combined weapon mode is the hypermegadeathpowerrangersteamlazerthing (trademarked patent pending)
This looks a bit silly in my opinion. Fortunately its very easy to forget its there.
Transformation is a high point of this set. every single piece of equipment is used to create the alt mode and some of it is sheer genius.
the lens is made of all this
and it compresses and slots together to form this
All of Spectros personal equipment stores in his shield
preparing the bots for alt mode is identical in all three compressing them down into little cubes
Then its simply a matter of slotting them together ,locking them into place with the shield and attaching the other parts
The result is quite nice
The flash is formed from Spectros rocket pods and the Handle of Spyglass's minigun. The tripod is the barrel of the minigun.
Im so glad that perfect effect decided to keep the original camera form instead of an updated one as it adds to the sets charms.
Paint apps on this set are amazing. The sheer amount of tiny little details on the weapons and bots finishes off a very professional looking package.
So in conclusion should Reflector here be in your collection. If you can afford him most definitely. He does command a pretty hefty price tag but in my opinion I got my moneys worth. I got my reflector from our resident plastic crack merchant and highly recommend the set
9/10
