I'm waiting to thank Jay for his generosity when we've heard what the runner up prizes are... *ninja* But yeah, great job Jay and Soundy! Looks like the comp did the trick. Membership's up, baybeeeee!!! Hmmm, funny you should mention that, I shall be discussing that particular topic with him over the weekend. The Contest fulfilled it's two part function, Primarily to produce a Mascot by the fans for the fans, and secondly, to promote the forum. We came to the conclusion that opening the contest to votes from the general public would generate some interest in the forum, as opposed to requiring people to join up just to vote. The latter would have produced alot of inactive and dormant accounts after the inital vote had been made. We are very happy that all the new members joined because they wanted too instead of feeling forced too. Plus it gave the average person a chance to look at the forum in parts,if they liked what the saw, they can always join up , that's the great thing about choice. And getting our thread pulled from TFW2005 makes us credible!

As you say it got round the issue of people creating accounts in order to vote, or worse, people not voting cos they didn't want to register. On the flipside it did have it's downside in that unless you were willing to go out and actively pursue votes then that was a handicap in this contest. Not to take anything away from Ger. Blackstuff is a genius character and Ger felt strong enough about it to commit to a campaign for votes. But I'm just pointing at that there are pros and cons to any voting system. Personally if this forum was to run a contest again in a similar format I probably wouldn't bother entering on the grounds that I know I'll never have the ability to garner the couple of hundred votes required to win it. But that's just me, and sure I'm old and bitter anyway! Also I can't believe TFW pulled the thread! That's a bit unfair! I promoted the contest by posting my own entry but made it clear that people should come here to vote for their fav. Let's boycott TFW, it's not like anyone goes there anyway!!

Thanks, I think? I know what you mean though, as much as I would like to think I won purely on merit, there was a lot of pestering people on the 'net to email in and vote involved. There is a big gap in the numbers of votes received which has no reflection (in my opinion) on how close the level of talent of talent was involved. When I first saw all the entries posted up I couldn't pick a stand-out winner out of them. I can definitely see the point of the email voting to raise the profile of the forum, but I'd hate to see that put people off entering these type of things cause of it. Tell you what, next time I'll tell you all my underhanded, er, I mean, clever, tactics for getting votes!

All feedback is welcome and good as we need to hear from you guys. Hopefully when we launch another contest or something similar in future, we hope to have more of a higher number of members count. This would mean keeping the voting to those members within the forum.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I wouldn't mind a "panel of judges" format for these competitions. A few people with a clear idea of what they are looking for, and no vested interest i.e. "we're picking this one cause he's our mate". A couple of mods and maybe a "guest Judge" type thing could work. What do you reckon?

Its not so much that, (I'm brilliant obivously), but the vote counts were 216, then 178, then 28? Thats a big jump. And its all to do with how much shouting around the internet we did. You had posts on MySpace, and so did I, and on Facebook, Deviantart, TFW etc, etc,...
I know part of the point of this contest was to promote the forum, but if it wasnt about that, I think an independent panel of judges might be a better way to judge the quality of the art than counting votes, which tends be swayed by who can make the most noise about it. And if that means that people like gdpwatson feel put off entering cause they don't think they will get anywhere, that can't be good, can it?
There was a really high standard of ideas and quality artwork across all the entries, and I don't think the spread of the votes reflected that, is all I'm saying

I bet he sat and created 200 googlemail accounts... wait and see. He'll crack soon enough and admit all! On a serious note the best way to judge anything is with a panel of people that have no ties to the entrants. However that's not always possible and may be considered too formal for a light hearted web based contest. As I said, there are pros and cons to any voting solution that is put in play. I'd say that if you were to do a contest of this magnitude ever again that the best method would be to try and create a pnael of judges specifically for the task - this was used in the final round of the IDW Design a Cover contest. But for other smaller competitions I reckon to keep it among the forum and to use the regular polling system. Thanks, I think? I know what you mean though, as much as I would like to think I won purely on merit, there was a lot of pestering people on the 'net to email in and vote involved. Whilst it sucks that I lost by 200 votes your entry was a worthy winner indeed. So which version of the seeker do you plan on getting? I myself would have to go for a Skywarp... I love the purple and black colour scheme! lol!
