Alas, a new line is upon us. It means one of 3 things, Hasbro are making a mistake by putting a line on the shelves with little support, a new series is here(not yet) or Michael Bay is peddling his new movie. We know the answer to this and I present to you the brand new voyager class Megatron with the new Mechtech feature weapons.
VOYAGER CLASS MEGATRON
Vehicle Mode
Megatron, for the third outing in the movie franchise, will be sporting, for the first time in the series, a human alternative mode and, as far as I know, the first time that Megatron will be a truck. He is a Mack tanker truck, with a tarp covering the tanker at the rear. The colours are quite frankly, a bore, and represents little of his possible on screen colour palette. I am guessing, we will see more gold and silver on him, but that might be for later. Apart from the odd brown apps around the wheel wells, it is rather dull to look at in vehicle mode. It would have been nice if the Mack logo was a different colour on the front grille. Details wise, the truck mode isn't especially well detailed beyond the usual.
Megatron, compared to the Hunt For The Decepticons Voyager Optimus Prime, Megatron's vehicle is a tad small for a voyager. This may have something to do with the new Mechtech weapons and thus has reduced the size of the overall figure.
Robot Mode
It seems that Megatron's good presence in the voyager class has been continued. The tarp that covers the tanker acts as a hood and cape for Megatron in robot mode, which partially covers his face. It is soft rubber and it is limiting to what the robot can be. But it does make it good looking and a little bit of different. Unfortunately, the colours do not change. A little gold or silver in between the lines of the chest and the shoulders would have improved the look of this figure. However, they do make up for this in sheer detail.
In robot terms, Megatron is ripped. His torso makes him look hard, ready for battle and pretty much better than you! His fingers are knarled and twisted, which ramps up the anger stakes of his appearance. The wheels go to the inside of his lower legs which is a nice change from wheels getting in the way on thighs (I'm looking at you Prime). The headlights also make up a part of his chest.
There is no real kibble to speak of. I love the voyager line because it hasn't fallen into the usual pitfalls of backpacks that plague the deluxe class.
For me though, things become a little more interesting once the hood and cape comes off. Megatron is free to be posed as you see fit. He is a figure with amazing balance, which I'll get to shortly, but first, back to the hood, or more exactly, what it hides.
Megatron has red light piping for his eyes and for the scar. I guess, the injury Prime inflicted on him during the final battle will stick with Megatron. So I guess it's ok for him to have a scratch on his face but not if he is taken down by a teenager with a powerful energy artifact.
His posture potential is quite substantial. Here are some examples, some subtle, some quite excellent.
The shoulders are a tad loose on mine so it cannot maintain holding up the cannon for very long.
Just so I can prove Megatron is not being propped up by Prime.
Such heroic nonsense.
I shall leave this with a final thought, and I'm not going to let this fact take away anything from this figure. For a voyager class, this seems to be quite small. I'm sure Animated Lockdown would have another notch in his belt for beating a voyager for height.
I know I did not cover the Mechtech cannon, since I really do not care for it. If i really wanted, I would buy the new voyager Optimus and put his gun on Megatron's arm.
Overall
Vehicle Mode - 2/5. The appearance and detail are not being called into question. It is just oh o dull to look at.
Robot Mode - 5/5. The detail really shines through on this aspect even if the colour palette is incredibly bland. With the hood and cape, he is a decent enough showpiece but without it the inner animal, the proper essence of Megatron is revealed.
